Carers Information Service delivers for Croydon’s carers during coronavirus crisis

The Carers Support Centre may be closed but the Carers Information Service is still delivering vital support to Croydon’s 35,000 carers during the coronavirus outbreak.

From helping carers get food parcels to posting emergency cards so carers can get to the shops during protecting shopping times, members of staff have been helping out wherever they can.

The service has received hundreds of enquiries from carers needing support, with carers from as far afield as Plymouth and Milton Keynes contacting the service to seek advice and help. Many are in desperate need, struggling to manage their caring role while self-isolating or living apart from the person they care for.

In an example of dedication, service manager Helen Thompson will be spending her Easter weekend stuffing envelopes and posting out over three thousands paper newsletters, so carers who aren't online have access to information on food deliveries, support for vulnerable people and financial help.

Helen has also personally donated the Centre’s plastic gloves and aprons, originally intended for carer art activities, to St Christopher’s Hospice to support their emergency appeal.

Helen Thompson said, 'We've received hundreds of coronavirus-related enquiries from carers needing our help. Our newsletter is usually delivered by our hard-working volunteers, but this Easter, my family and I will be stuffing envelopes to get vital COVID-19 support information out to carers who aren't online. I'm so proud of all our staff going the extra mile at the moment, and encourage any carers who need help to reach out.'

Operating remotely by phone and email, the Carers Information Service team provides information, advice and support to carers supporting friends, family and neighbours due to illness, disability or old age.
