There are over six million carers in the UK looking after family member, friend or neighbour who needs help due to illness, frailty or disability. In 1997 the Whitgift Foundation established the Carers' Information Service to support the carers of Croydon, of which there are an estimated 30,000. We provide advice, information, advocacy, training and grants, as well as a series of free publications and special events throughout the year.

The Carers' Information Service has just published the Summer Guide for Parent Carers 2010, a factsheet listing events and activities suitable for children with additional needs over the summer. If you care for a child under 18 with a disability or special need, read the guide now and let us help you survive the summer!

At some point in our lives, 60% of us will take on a caring role and it is not unusual to look after more than one person, or to be in a situation where the person you care for also looks after you. There is no single caring experience though - it can be temporary, or long-term and it may result in high levels of support being necessary, or just a one-off piece of advice that makes all the difference. Whether you have suddenly found yourself in a caring situation or whether the role has developed over a number of years, information is essential - so that you know about your rights and entitlements and how to get services, both for yourself and the person you care for.

If you are looking after someone in Croydon and need information about caring, this website can help. Here you will find out about the work of the Carers' Information Service as well as details of both local and national services and organisations that can support carers.
